Mom and I a few years ago...........................................Me and the radiation girls in cell Tx1 in Jan. 2019

My parents were married for 64 years before my father passed away in 2013. My mom followed him a little over 3 years later in 2016. I miss them both every day... -Hal
I've been working with visually impaired people for many years. I started out with the Michigan Blind Athletic Association at their annual Sports Camp in Kalamazoo helping there with Track & Field. Then I started taking some of the more talented kids on trips to Colorado Springs. Those were great trips. That led to me forming my own non-profit called Running Blind. I still work with that helping to organize Adventure Trips and helping to find guide runners for people who need them. (My Running Blind website (RunningBlind.org) has a lot of info about all of this. I also volunteer for Michigan Ski For Light which helps blind people XC ski.

Barney Thomas: 1952 - 2007 - Barney was a friend of mine who ran with the AATC. He died of ALS after an ~ 2 year disease progression. With his help under extremely difficult circumstances, I wrote a story about his experience running a marathon in Antarctica, which he did after contracting the disease. Most of the story was written after he lost his ability to speak, which made it a real challenge for both of us, but we finished it before he passed away. Getting the picture with the Notre Dame Cheerleaders (N.D. was his alma mater) supporting Barney with the cards I'd made up was the icing on the cake, and a miracle in itself that I pulled that off. The game was on Sept. 15, 2007, and U of M won 38 - 0. Had it been a closer game, the cheerleaders likely wouldn't have been able to take the time to support my cause. I still remember the look on Barney's face when I showed him the photo. He couldn't speak, but he said all he needed to say with his eyes. Barney died less than 2 months later, on November 10, actually during the game that the Irish lost to Air Force putting their season record at 1 & 9. (I happened to be there when he passed.) He was 56 years old. At Barney's (Irish) wake, this picture I got was the ONLY picture that was on display! The article I wrote is 22 pages long including some nice pictures from Antarctica. I hope you enjoy reading it.
